Wigan Goju Ryu Karate Club are pleased to see the Women in Sport Campaign aimed at encouraging daughters and mums, nieces and aunts to reconnect, or find new ways to connect, by spending time together being active.
Two of our adult Black Belts, Sacha and Szaye, pictured below at their black belt grading in 2019 with 9th Dan Sensei Tony Christian, began karate as very young girl cadets, along with their mum – their story is a great model of how the idea behind the campaign can work well in practice.
“After many failed sports endeavours in gymnastics, tennis, swimming, and even ballet classes, our mum decided to sign me and my sister up to the same karate club classes that our older brother took part in at Wigan Goju Ryu Karate Club. After watching us enjoy ourselves during the classes, she decided to join in with us, and karate got even better.
Participating in karate classes with my mum and my sister has really given us all a confidence boost when going about our daily lives. It was great being able to spend time with our mum during classes as we all gradually learned new skills and earned new belts together. It was brilliant learning how to do proper self defence along with the fun of learning katas, and with the added bonus of keeping healthily active!”
